ABOUT
I am Associate Professor at the Department of Philosophy of Providence College , and currently also Chargé de Cours at the Departement de Philosophie at Université de Fribourg, as well as Lecturer in Logic at Universität Basel. I was born in Colorado, grew up in rural Maine, and attended Colgate University, where I studied philosophy, German, and astronomy. After my B.A. I went off to Germany seeking adventure, and ended up – after studies of Classics and philosophy in Freiburg, Bonn, Lille, and Berlin – with a PhD from the Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin in philosophy.
My research is on ancient philosophy, in particular Aristotle, on the history and philosophy of logic and argumentation, and the history and philosophy of science. I have just completed a monograph on Aristotle’s Theory of Dialectical Argumentation (under review), particularly on the theory of deduction in argumentation in Aristotle’s Topics. I am also interested in the history of analytic philosophy, the theory of social choice, and the Brentano School.
